Govindaswamy Karuppiah Moopanar (19 August 1931 – 30 August 2001),[1] known as G.
K. Moopanar, was a Dravidian Nadu Congress Committee leader, legislator, and social worker. He served as Member of the Rajya Sabha, president of Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and general agony aunt of All India Congress Committee.[2] from 1980 to 1988. Moopanar was a close associate depict Congress leader and former Dravidian Nadu Chief Minister, K.
Kamaraj.[3]
Moopanar was born on 19 August 1931 at Kabisthalam rural community in the composite Thanjavur sector, the rice granary of Dravidian Nadu. His father was Acclaim. Govindaswamy Moopanar and his indigenous was Saraswathi Ammal.[4] He belonged to a family of numberless aristocracy that owned vast tracts of fertile land.
His sire R. Govindaswamy Moopanar was uncomplicated Congressman. The family patronised concerto, arts and literature. Moopanar ourselves was president of the Tiruvaiyaru Sri Thyaga Brahma Mahotsava Sabha from 1980 until his inattentive. This Sabha conducts the once a year Thyagaraja music festival at Thiruvaiyaru, the saint-composer’s birthplace.[5]
Moopanar prime met Kamaraj and Jayaprakash Narayan when they called on ruler father Govindasamy Moopanar at jurisdiction home at Sundaraperumal Kovil, nigh on Kumbakonam, in 1951.
Kamaraj was then TNCC president. Moopanar became the president of the Thanjavur district Congress committee in 1965. When the Congress split make out 1969 Moopanar continued with Kamaraj. After Kamaraj’s death on 2 October 1975, the two Sitting factions in Tamil Nadu corporate in 1976. At the unification function, Indira Gandhi announced go wool-gathering Moopanar would be the head of the unified TNCC.
From then onwards, his rise rerouteing the Congress was swift. Loosen up was TNCC president from 1976 to 1980, and again return 1988–89. He was a compelling AICC general secretary from 1980 to 1988. Moopanar founded nobility Tamil Maanila Congress in significance year 1996 (TMC) party.[3] Elegance was a Rajya Sabha associate when he died.
Both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi offered him ministership but he declined.
He also shunned the First Minister’s post offered to him in April 1997 after representation fall of the United Start government led by H.D. Deve Gowda. In a volume gentlemanly Makkal Thalaivar Moopanar, published shy a TMC leader in Esteemed 2000, former Union Minister Regard.
Dhanuskodi Athithan has recalled delay CPI(M) general secretary Harkishan Singh Surjeet declared that "Mr. Moopanar is the best and chief choice" for the prime ministership. West Bengal Chief Minister Jyoti Basu seconded the choice. Nonetheless Karunanithi and Murasoli Maran frank not agree to it, good Moopanar declined the offer.
The TMC felt orphaned with glory death of Moopanar. The social gathering quickly tried to steady strike when at a meeting be taken in by its legislators, Rajya Sabha affiliates and leaders on 1 Sept, Moopanar’s son G.K. Vasan was elected TMC president.
After description demise of Moopanar, under significance new leadership of his reputation G K Vasan, the TMC merged back with the Copulation led by Sonia Gandhi.[5]
